Various establishments, though bearing different names, all shared one core purpose: to champion the arts. On November 7, 1892, The Empire Palace Theatre first opened its doors on this site, becoming the inaugural venue in the legendary Moss Empires chain. Designed by the celebrated British theater architect Frank Matcham, the newly constructed building was a marvel of opulence, with every detail exuding luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Sudden_Blaze\"><\/span>A Sudden Blaze<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next two decades were the most vibrant in the theater&#8217;s history, showcasing performances by all the leading artists of the era. This flourishing period of voices, incredible talents, music, and creativity continued until May 9, 1911. That&#8217;s when a massive fire broke out right on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While all 3,000 audience members managed to evacuate safely, the tragedy still claimed 11 lives backstage, including illusionist Sigmund Neuberger, who was about to take his final bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the fire, the building underwent extensive restoration, and just three months later, The Empire Palace Theatre reopened its doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Necessary_Transformations\"><\/span>Necessary Transformations<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the rising popularity of cinema eventually presented the theater with a new challenge: the need to re-equip the stage for larger, more spectacular productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Matcham&#8217;s continued design expertise, The Empire Palace Theatre reopened on October 1, 1928, with the musical <em>Show Boat<\/em> making its grand debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, from 1928 to 1963, audiences at the theater exclusively enjoyed musical comedies, operas, variety shows, and ice spectaculars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Partnering_with_a_Renowned_Festival\"><\/span>Partnering with a Renowned Festival<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond individual productions, from 1947 to 1963, The Empire Palace Theatre served as the primary venue for The Edinburgh International Festival, largely responsible for the festival&#8217;s ballet program. Notably, it was on this very stage in 1947 that Margot Fonteyn performed in &#8220;Sleeping Beauty.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Radical_Shift_and_a_New_Identity\"><\/span>A Radical Shift and a New Identity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, after 1963, for nearly thirty years, the theater functioned primarily as a bingo hall, only occasionally reverting to its role as a creative space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early 1970s saw the name simplified to The Empire Theatre, and live music concerts began to take place there, exclusively after 11 PM once the bingo players had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Revival_and_Reopening\"><\/span>Revival and Reopening<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until a major renovation in June 1994 that the theater was finally reopened and renamed The Edinburgh Festival Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the restoration of its former grandeur and a stunning blend of various styles, the new theater now meets all modern standards.
